あひるの空29 (Ahiru no Sora 29)
Author: 日向武史 (Takeshi Hinata) (2010)
jusco’s Rating: ★★★

The reason for an average rating this time round despite あひるの空 (Ahiru no Sora) being one of my favourite manga series is because it is still currently in the transition period between their last basketball match and the next (Inter High competition); the pacing is slower than usual. In addition, due to the introduction of several new characters that will most likely play larger roles in the future, there is a decrease in involvement of the main characters, thus also reducing the relatable feelings felt strongly in previous volumes. But nevertheless, it’s apparent that the author is slowly and wisely building up his story. It’s the series’ biggest strength: the intricate character development that provides the story’s richness.

I always look forward to the following releases. It’s a superbly crafted basketball manga and I personally find it superior to Slam Dunk. There is realism, the ability to allow readers to relate to each character and their personal struggles; a lot of times you feel as if you were one of the characters or even interacting with them. Highly recommended for basketball fans.
