Is there a feel-good manga better than Yotsuba&!? In fact, is there any book that can even compare? For those unfamiliar with this extremely popular series – yes, it’s popular despite not having any violence or sex – it depicts the life of Yotsuba, a green-haired young girl, her father and several neighbours. Each chapter is focused on one thing, for example: ‘Yotsuba & Pancakes’ or ‘Yotsuba & the Electronics Store’; understand the title now? The reason for this series having so much appeal to critics and readers alike is the light-heartedness and lovable optimism that radiates from Yotsuba. She is just adorable, hilarious even, as she encounters random things, people, situations that causes natural reactions expected of a young girl (though at times, the reactions can be highly abnormal; she’s a highly unique individual). Despite this being the tenth volume, each chapter was still exciting to read. One of my favourite chapters in the entire series thus far was ‘Yotsuba & Lies’, in which her father has a chance to teach her a very important lesson, in a humourous manner, of course. As we are introduced to Yotsuba’s life, we are invited to laugh along. You feel as if you were there walking on the street with her as she waits for her next adventure. At times pleasantly insightful and always funny, this manga series is sure to brighten up anyone’s day.
